Whimbrel is a Christchurch based architecture and structural engineering design practice run by James Carr & Vern Marais.
In our architectural work we specialise in the design of small to medium size residential and commercial buildings, with a focus on carefully detailed and environmentally responsible new traditional architecture and considered alterations to heritage buildings. We can be persuaded to work in most styles if a case can be made for it, from Romanesque to Gothic, Baroque (English, European or Scandinavian), Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, High Modernism or something else entirely if you like.
We also do structural engineering design of new houses, residential and commercial buildings, as well as alterations and seismic strengthening to existing houses and buildings. This being Christchurch, much of our work consists of engineering reports on earthquake damaged houses and designing foundation repairs and replacements. We are also interested in helping to design new ways of putting buildings together if you have a new system you would like to develop.
James Carr is a Chartered Professional Engineer specialising in structural engineering and an architectural designer. He has worked as a structural engineer for about ten years, and intermittently as an architectural designer for about five years.
